Follower of Gaspar van Wittel, gen. Vanvitelli - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(1653-1736) Rome, Tiber river with a view of the apse of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, pen and brown ink, grey wash on laid paper, 22,8 x 36,5 cm, browned, some foxing, mounted, framed, (Sch)

Provenance: Private collection, Germany.

Literature: Comp. G. Briganti, Gaspar van Wittel e l'origine della veduta settecentesca, 1966, p. 202, No. 91; G. Briganti, Gaspar Van Wittel, L. Laureati and L. Trezzani, 1996, pp. 187-188, No. 153; N. Spinosa (Ed.), Gaspar van Wittel: Views of Italy, Exh.cat. Cesare Lampronti Gallery, London, 28 June - 28 July 2013, Cat. 8, p. 32-33. The veduta with its view of the apse of San Giovanni Dei Fiorentini was rendered by Gaspar van Wittel with three gouaches in 1685 ( Briganti 1966, Nos. 89-91; Briganti 1996, Nos. 151-153).

These three versions show each also the Castel Sant'Angelo and the stairs of the Ospedale dei Pazzi on the river bank of Tiber river. In the present drawing the artist concentrated on the apse of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, the Ponte Sant Angelo and the houses joining. On the basis of styistic and technical characteristics the attribution to van Wittel must be excluded. The drawing was presumably executed by a follower from the mid-18th century.
