Literature: Ralph Toledano, Michele Marieschi, L‘Opera Completa, Milan 1988, p. 154, no. C 47 (ill.). Michele Marieschi, who died prematurely, was probably apprenticed to Gaspare Diziani. It was presumably thanks to Diziani‘s connections that Marieschi was offered an employment at the Saxon court in Dresden. However, he returned to his native town as early as 1735. Marieschi painted numerous Venetian vedute for Marshal Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg, among others, as well as countless architectural capriccios of the Venetian Lagoon and the Terra Ferma, but also depictions of fantastic palace structures featuring sophisticated stairways that are reminiscent of Piranesi. His works represent a fusion of Canaletto‘s and Francesco Guardi‘s art. Marieschi‘s architectural capriccios show ancient ruins adjacent to modest huts and rural buildings. His compositions are imaginatively distorted renderings of the scenery around Venice, with its lagoons, islands, and canals. Ralph Toledano has pointed out that Marieschi populated the two present paintings with figures in the manner of Francesco Simonini. Pendant to preceding lot.
