Mercedes-Benz presented its new SL at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963. It was designed to walk the tightrope of replacing two predecessors, the über-car SL and the somewhat pigeon-breasted 190 SL. The company focussed its efforts on the latter’s market segment, as the age of custom models had passed. Nonetheless, the modern body was fitted with a Paul Bracq engine that had no difficulty coping with the finned form, and that in its new, full-throttle injection version transformed the 230 SL into a zippy and powerful sports car. Of course, the SL was also available with a coupé roof, whose concave shape gave the W113 series its nickname: the Pagoda.

This 230 SL rolled off the assembly line 1965 in the unusual colour of light red with eggshell interior, heading for the dealership in Cologne. A 230 with stick shift, it is doubtless among the most sporting of its kind. The Pagoda was purchased by a collector from Upper Austria around 2000, who restored the vehicle completely. The work focused assiduously on preserving the original features, which is why the first engine is still operating under the bonnet, and even the body number is the same as the one on the data card. The SL finally received individual approval in 2002, but was never registered and rarely moved. Health reasons forced its sale to the consignor, who took it for registration as its old approval had expired. There are absolutely no tell-tale signs that 15 years have passed since the SL was restored, which is indicative of the quality of workmanship at the time! But this Pagoda has far more to offer as well: the colour, origins, condition – it all fits perfectly!
